Beam Me Up, Please!: A (quite literal) walkthrough of Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

I'm afraid that this is going to be a slightly shorter post with less substance than usual, as I wanted it to be a reflection on the game itself.

The best way to describe Everybody's Gone to the Rapture is a walking simulator, that's broken up by occasional 'radio'-type dialogue. In regards to gameplay that's basically it - set in the 1980s you wander around a British village by yourself as everyone else has mysteriously disappeared. You're supposed to put together a story based off of context clues and the snippets of dialogue, providing you haven't died of boredom before you've walked down the road to the next house.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture actually received very positive reviews and a fair amount of awards, ranging from Creative Gameplay to Best Emotional Music and, as much as I'm really not a fan of this game, it's not hard to see why. EGTTR is stunning in terms of its design. It's very strange and exciting when you see a British village in a game, as it rarely ever happens and the designers clearly didn't skip on the detail, right down to the style of the roadsigns and shop fronts. I'm sure the music was great too, although to me it was forgettable. This game categorises itself as an 'art game,' so naturally style over substance is going to be a priority. Then again you could also look at games like Journey, that have more in common with interactive art than it does gaming and that game is just, well, good. In my opinion style and substance should ever really be mutually exclusive in games; why else would you want to come back and play them again and again? Sure, make it as pretty as you wish, but give us something to actually do. It's not a big ask.

I can see what this game is trying to do but for me it just doesn't work. In all honestly I couldn't even finish the game myself and had to read the rest of the plot/watch it on play throughs as there was just no motivation for me to keep going. As a new gamer you want to keep things easy and relatively threat-free, but there is a limit.

I don't really have much else to say about EGTTR as it didn't give me much itself. If you like slow, dry games that look pretty then go for it. If not, I'd recommend you play literally anything else.
